Born in Vienna on 16 June 1890,
he applied for flying duty but was refused
and gazetted as an engineer officer. He was
later granted training as an observer and was
send to the Russian and Italian fronts. On
4 May, Fiala shot down an Italian airship,
bringing his total score to 5. Fiala was then
given pilot training and continued to score
victories and also earn various honours. Fiala
ended the war with 29 victories and died on
29 October 1964.
