The son of a school teacher,
Hohndorf was born on 10 November 1892 in Bavaria.
He received his civilian pilot’s certificate
on 3 November 1913. He spent most of his time
as a test pilot, although he did see some action
and scored 12 victories. He died in September
1917 while test flying an aircraft.
