RAF RE8

The R.E. 8 or "Harry Tate" had its early origins in the R.E. 5 and R.E. 7 and was designed by the factory as a replacement for the much-maligned B.E. 2c's and 2e's with whom it shared more than a passing resemblance. A typical Factory product, built for inherent stability with marked dihedral, ugly extensions, high-aspect ratio control surfaces and four-bladed airscrew. Riggers, with whom the machine was never popular, maintained that it had both lateral and longitudinal dihedral, and it did, in fact, appear to have a "cocked-up" nose. Bad choice as it was, over 3800 were built and equipped nearly every corps squadron.
